Shadows of the Damned

Product Description

His name is Garcia Hotspur, hunter of demons, and his wrath will bring hell to its knees. From the creative genius of Suda 51 (No More Heroes) and Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil) comes an all-new psychologically twisted vision of hell unlike anything seen before. Shadows of the Damned combines visceral grindhouse-style action with dark, grotesque horror to create a mind-shattering adventure that has to been seen to be believed. When evil demonic creatures kidnap Garcia’s girlfriend, it’s up to him to travel to the City of the Damned to get her back. Aided by a former demon with the ability to transform into an array of vicious weapons, Garcia will once again take on the mantel of “demon hunter” and rip apart the horrifying forces of the underworld to protect what he loves most. Players must harness the power of the light to fight the army of the dark in unique light versus darkness gameplay that will forever change the way gamers perceive puzzles, combat, and terror. Combining the punk rock style of Suda 51 with the legendary horror design of Shinji Mikami, Shadows of the Damned will take gamers on an in-your-face thrill ride through demon-torn towns, shadow infested forests, grimy sewers and more. Featuring the most twisted boss battles ever seen, warped visuals and intense visceral combat, Shadows of the Damned will challenge gamers to break through the ultimate head-trip to help Garcia rescue his tortured girlfriend from the clutches of a mysterious enemy. Brace yourself for one hell of a trip to the city of the damned.

This will be brief and to the point as I need to get back to playing the game. Longtime gamers capable of intelligent thought will get everything they need to know out of this review. I'm mostly doing this to counter the 2-star review from the guy that can't appreciate a game if it borrows something from another game. News flash: all games nowadays borrow from previous games. It's inevitable. You shouldn't be criticizing a game for borrowing elements from other games, you should be determining whether or not those elements come together in a way that is awesome and intriguing.

Things I've noticed
+ I'm laughing a lot
+ Feels like a Mikami game (Resident Evil 4, God Hand) perfectly blended with a Suda game (Killer 7, No More Heroes)
+ Soundtrack is pretty damn great (done by Akira Yamaoka who you may recognize as the composer for the Silent Hill games)
+ Gunplay feels excellent, headshots are rewarding and encouraged
+ Garcia is agile, doesn't... Read more

I am only a few hours into the game, but I would like to share my initial impressions so far. I will be updating this review once I am completely finished with the game. Let's get started:

First of all, please note that the "top critics" have all been giving disputing scores on this game (IGN - 7, Gamespot - 8.5, etc). I am pointing this out because so many gamers these days are number slaves. True, there are awful and fantastic games out there, but some games are caught in between; these games are difficult to judge by a number system, and so we need to be careful how to approach them. In the case of Shadows, a number cannot do it justice.

This game is a homage to old school grindfest/horror B movies. It's over-the-top, and it's vulgar. But this game does not bank on these factors alone. The gameplay, atmosphere, and pacing are near perfect in this game. The gameplay resembles RE4, but it is smoother. You are able to dodge enemy attacks quite easily and... Read more

Suda 51 is back with his latest creation. This time the game has found its way on the XBOX360 and will have you playing the part of Garcia Hotspur, Demon Hunter. After another successful outing Hotspur comes home to his hot girlfriend only to find that the current bad-ass in Hell, Fleming, has decided that he's had enough with Hotspur's murders and steals away the girlfriend. This leaves Hotspur with only one choice, he must journey into hell and rescue her. The problem is that there's going to be a lot of really pissed off demons between him and Fleming. As you play the game, however, I think you'll find that Garcia Hotspur doesn't mind having to mow down hundreds of demons.

Graphically this game looks good. It kind of has this old Transylvanian feel to it, and it really works for the game. There's also the darkness mechanic which gives you a difference perspective, while you're trying to survive, and introduces a vital puzzle piece to the game play. The different demons... Read more
